Hello everyone As you are aware I run the Upminster through the years photo site and have recently received an image of Barking Signal Box and wondered if you might be interested in seeing it. Follow this link - upminsterthroughtheyears.fotopic.net/p66881821.htmlThis was taken in 1961 as the box was under construction, many thanks to D. Bolton for the image. TMBA

This is a wonderful set of photos. One of the signalmen at the new Barking cabin was named Heavens. I can't remember his first name but his son Frank was my driver when I was a guard at Northfields (Picc). Frank went on to become test train driver for many years.
The one of Dave in the cab of an "F Stock" is actually O Stock.
The one of the Battery Loco and Jim Ryall shows the late Eric Williamson (not Willinson). I knew Eric many years ago when he was an AM on the Northern Line. Eric was a real character and led a colourful life. He once made it to the front page of the Sunday Mirror! I can't possibly tell you why in a public forum but it was related to certain ladies in his life.
Jim Ryall was a trainmen's inspector (now called an I/O) who went to Hong Kong to help with the training for the original MIS system there in about 1979.

I have changed the name to Williamson and thank you for your memories they are invaluable. Cheers TMBA

Since Northfields used to be Northfields & Little Ealing, I am overcome with an image of Maurice Chevalier singing, "Frank Heavens from Leetle Ealings..."

That's terrible but it made me laugh. The one thing I remember about Frank was that his wife made the thickest bread puddings I've ever seen. We would eat them sitting in the train in Acton Town sidings with a cup of hot tea, waiting for time to go to Uxbridge at 04:50 on a freezing winter's morning. The bread pudding would last all the way back to Wood Green and breakfast.
