What is the point of having buttons inside the elevators at London Underground stations? They seem to be about as useful as the passenger operated door buttons on the trains are in that the elevator goes when it wants to and pressing the button has absolutely no effect.

Saving money by not needing staff to work the lifts is my guess.

I seem to recall the mode of lift operation can be selected by station staff. Therefore if the lift has been placed in passenger mode, the buttons will be active. (Been a while since I did my lift training and never touched a lift since!).
