I've noticed some new signs appearing on the tracks at Ruislip Gardens lately.
The first type of sign is a black triangle on a white background with rounded corners, with one of the corners pointing straight up. One such sign is positioned mid-way along the eastbound platform at Ruislip Gardens.
The second type of sign looks like a speed limit sign - it has a large number 5 and the letters 'Eng' above it. This one appears near the flat junction west of the station.
What do these signs mean?

The new signs appearing there, and all over the combine are speed restriction signs for engineering trains, which passenger trains do not need to adhere to..... IIRc the black traingle one is a warning to the driver to slow down for the restriction.

I had a feeling that they may have had something to do with engineering trains - but why only 5mph? I thought engineering trains could go faster than that...

Although far from a million miles from where I sit at this moment, I'm not familiar with the wonders of the Central! But I wonder could it be a reminder to engineers trains that they should observe that speed on entering West Ruislip depot which is after all just west of Ruislip Gardens? Perhaps there's a different limit applicable to service trains? Just a thought!

Unfortunately the person whom I believe is the expert on this in our office has just gone on holiday, so I can't ask him. (Speed restriction signs are a Signal Engineer's responsibility BTW)

Unfortunately the person whom I believe is the expert on this in our office has just gone on holiday, so I can't ask him. Who needs experts?! As you may know, there is quite a number of bridge weight restrictions over the combine. Over such structires, the more heavier trains (i.e the engineers trains) have to slow down to 5 mph over them, just in case 'something was to go wrong'! The new signage takes this into account and displays the speed limits for the engineers trins over such structures. The reason why the speed restrictions do not apply to passenger stock is because the bridges are deemed to withstand normal line speed, as the trains are a tad lighter

Howdy
I belive these signs are one of the recommendations from the Chiswick Park derailment (xx) months ago, there are so many speed restrictions for Transplant Trains it proves impossible to remember them all, hence the new signs, Ruislip Gardens is the Bridge over (cough cough splutter ) road. so Engineers trains are limited to 5 MPH over the bridge as far as the Triangle sign, which is the T board in effect. If you look on the eastbound side, the Triangle is adjacent to the platform as thats where the front of the train will be when the rear has cleared the bridge.
The only other one i've actually seen is North Acton to East Acton, another dodgy bridge.
