I can't seem to understand why the crossover is right in the middle of the station? As in, right between the former platforms.
Could it be used when the station was open? Or do trains now just use it?

The crossover at Swiss Cottage wasn't there when the station was open. It was commissioned from 10/5/64 with push button control from Finchley Road cabin.
In a way it replaced the emergency facility at Lords disused station, but this wasn't decommissioned until 24/4/71.

I should have noted also -
There was a signalbox at Swiss Cottage until 1910, so presumably there was a crossover there until then (not sure where, though).
