When trains have been drawn down to the outlet signal on the east end of Ealing Common, to exit onto the tracks, do they have to be a certain length?
I was watching the 1996TS today, and I noticed that it had overrun the points and stopped only a few inches from the FRLs positioned just beyond the nose of said points. From my vantage point I could see that the rear cab of the train was just past the diamond STOP board.
The train remained here for a considerable length of time, and was eventually pulled back up to the Alps and sepaated, with the Stratford-end unit left on the Alps and the Stanmore-end unit shunted off somewhere.
Is the train too long to exit the depot in that direction?

It's not a case of too long to exit the depot - it's too long to do the full shunt, but then so are D stocks ;D If you watch there at the end of the morning peak, trains stable from Ealing Common end, onto 19 or 20 Road. The shunters then move the trains to where they are required. If the D stock stops at the outlet shunt signal, WL116A, the rear cars are not clear of all the points necessary to put the train onto the shed roads. THe shunter will lean out and press the 'donkey kn*b' plunger (discussed in another thread ;D) This will cause WL116A to clear with a route 1, which signals the train towards the sand drag. One of the reasons we always tell drivers to NEVER to operate that plunger ;D ;D

How many of you remember that there used to be TWO outlet roads at the Acton end of the depot and both of them were unidirectional? The road nearest the eastbound District connected with the westbound Piccadilly platform and was mostly used for incoming stablers. There was a signal at the top of the ramp which used to be a mini-semaphore but was later changed. I can't remember wether it was depot controlled of from Acton cabin. The other road was mostly for trains entering service and If I remember connected with both the eastbound local from Northfield and the eastbound road from Ealing Common
Remember that Picadilly trains used to stable in Ealing Common and District trains at Northfields and crews from either line and depot were road trained into both. Theres a book (Tube trains under London I think) that has a photo of the westbound connection into EC Depot in it.

That facing crossover from the w/b Ealing to the w/b local would certainly be useful today - I'm sure the District T/Ops love seeing Piccs get put across at WL25 ;D
