How long after the introduction of the Jubilee Line (Stanmore-Charing Cross) was the decision taken to extend the line to Stratford? Was there a technological or geographical reason for the line not simply continuing on from Charing Cross to Westminster and on to Stratford?

The original alignment was intended to lead through the City (Aldwych,Fenchurch St) then out towards New Cross/Gate,and the tunnels lead some way past Charing X in this direction. Through the mid- to late 70s there was much discussion about destinations (Lewisham,Docklands) and finance, but apart from a test tunnel in the New X area, nothing was done, and the project was quietly shelved. In the 80s property boom,it became clear that transport was going to be a real problem, and, indeed,a choke on development.Developers agreed to contibute toward the building of Canary Wharf, the Millenium dome was planned, and huge developments were planned in the London Bridge area.Stratford was chosen for its transport links, and the perceived need for investment in the area. The then Minister responsible,Michael Heseltine, announced the Jubilee line extension as we know it. It was authorised in 1990 and construction began in 1993. The reason that Charing X was effectively abandoned was that they wanted the line to serve Westminster, and from Green Park onwards, the line curves off in completely the wrong direction. In order to go from Charing X to Westminster, the line would virtually have to double back on itself, then again to head Eastwards once more. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jubilee_line_extension

the tunnels lead some way past Charing X in this direction. Apologies for going off-topic but is this the reason that the DLR is proposed to come to Charing Cross?

Mcmaddog: Yes indeed. Disused/underused tunnels exert a fascination upon those planning new lines. Cost is also a consideration, too.
