Do guards simply get bored/lonely in the rear cab, or is there a special reason for occasionally operating the doors from inside the rear car?

Got off a westbound at Kensal Rise last week and saw the guard conscientiously step right out of the back cab and onto the platform to watch the passengers before stepping back inside.

Guards if caught in the back cab WILL be disciplined and it would appear that it doesnt matter how packed the train is either as Guards have recently been given letters telling them they will be disciplined if caught in the rear cab again.
As for being bored in the back cab i dont think so, more like the Guard had had enough of smelling someones stinking body odour or someones smelly macdonalds.
Which direction was the train going and how many stops did you see this?

So it seems LOROL don't really care about you guys then if they will discipline you for working the train from the rear cab. As we all know, the NLL really does go through some wonderful areas of north London and the threat of attack must be high.
Will they dare discipline you then if you argue that your safety was at risk?

It was a westbound train, and I only noticed it at Kensal Rise due to needing to walk back along the platform to exit the station. If it is actually compulsory for the guard to be in with the passengers, it seems a little like the old days on the 38's and the 59's.

However this is probably because the train is overcrowded. I do have a question though. Are guards allowed to re-open (release) the train doors from the rear cab if they see someone running late for the train?

Guards are not 'officially allowed to reopen the doors once closed' You can only 'reopen' the doors from the front or rear cabs only. If a Guard is working from inside the train once all the doors are closed that is it as there is not a door release buttons on the panel inside the train. With regard opening the doors from the rear cab if a Guard does do it he/she will be subject to discipline as the Guards have not been trained to open the doors ( i know it sounds stupid but we do live in a world where people are very quick to sue if something goes wrong) so if i am on a extremely overcrowded train and working from the rear cab i will not reopen the doors. On London Overground and on class 378s it is the DRIVERS responsibility to open and reopen the doors.

Thanks very much for that answer routemasterkeith. So is there anyone that is allowed to travel in the rear cab of the 378s?
