The crossover that is just north of Hampstead: was it put in when the CCHR was built as a serious possibility of turning trains short of Golders Green? Why would this be needed? Or was it put in because the depot at Golders Green faced south and, before the shunting neck was put in, there wasn't a way of getting trains out of the depot into the platforms at Golders Green, or at the end of the day, out of the platforms at Golders Green into the depot without reversing them? In which case, why was the crossover put nearer to Hampstead than Golders Green?

The crossover at Hampstead was there from "day one". Initially some trains terminated short there. Remember that there was little development at Golders Green when the railway opened.
My notes for the November 1907 CCE&H WTT shows a 50/50 service - i.e. either 4/8, 5/10 or 6/12 minutes, according to the time of day.
Sunday services from May 1908 saw all trains go through to Golders Green.
From June 1908 the same applied on Saturdays afternoon/evening.
By November 1908 it reverted to the 50/50 arrangement.
There was a shunting neck at Golders Green (the current one that now goes a short way into the tunnel - it didn't then).
