I've often wondered why the Met section between Chorleywood and Amersham wasn't routed via Chesham thereby eliminating the need for a shuttle. I'm sure there is more than one good reason why this was never considered at the time the line was built/electrified.

I'm sure there is more than one good reason why this was never considered at the time the line was built/electrified. I'm sure that once upon a time it was planned to run on to Tring. I think they may have even started to plan the route out.

The line opened to Chesham before Amersham, and was originally planned to join the LNWR mainline near Berkhampstead. The planned route was still visible until it was built on in the post war period. Rather than go from Chalfont to Chesham then Amersham, if it were one line, it would have made more sense to go to Amersham first, as it is, the branch doesn't actually leave the main until the outskirts of Amersham anyway.

The line of council flats on the east side off Victoria Road are in line with the end of the branch and on much the same level.
Personally I wonder why the line was routed along a ridge rather than up the Chess valley.

The people of Chesham paid for the Met to built the last half mile to Chesham town centre.
