What does someone who is both interested in UndergrounD signalling and bellringing (especially those bells cast by Mears & Stainbank <ahem> in Whitechapel) [1] treat himself to? Well - it is the diagram for Whitechapel IMR - members might be interested in the following photographs: The last IMR diagram, amended to take into account the closing of Shoreditch: The obverse of the same - note that it is printed in reverse: Also I landed very lucky and on the mounting plate for the last diagram is etched the previous version: What does interest me though, is the scratched out areas on the far right and in the middle: perhaps this part of the question belongs in historical: Can anyone help with the missing captions, please? I know what the track and signals were - it is the boxes that interest me... [1] I've not only collected this diagram today, I've also spent 45 minutes hefting around a lot of bronze bell cast in Whitechapel - so I apologise if this post is a bit more oblique than normal.

It's very pleasing to see that this diagram's gone to a good home! I've done a spot of research through old bookwiring sheets and can say that: - the left-hand box contained indications for two backlock release plungers. If you look at the NB road there are erasures by signals B16 and B22 (where delta AK is now shown) where the plungers were removed in October 1959.
- the right-hand box contained an indication for 28 slot, for moves onto the Eastern Region.

Coo! Thank-you. I'll chase up the bit about the ∆'s [1]; however: wouldn't B. 28 slot be for moves off the ER? [1] the amendment is sufficiently early that the two holes are filled by aluminium plugs. I'll try and get a UV light on the backing plate to see what was scraped off, I think that there is a ∆ symbol there... (after shining plane polarised light on it).....

[/li][li]the right-hand box contained an indication for 28 slot, for moves onto the Eastern Region.[/quote] Hear hear to the first part. 28 slot was most definatly for moves off the ER (see Harsigs excellant East London diagram). The slot would be necessary as the shunt B23 route 2 to the FRL neded protection and also the overlap on B27 applied through the crossover towards B19. Photo 106 in Vic Mitchells East London Line book, shows the north end of Shoreditch platform in 1952 looking towards the junction. It shows the platform starter which is an ER three aspect head mounted on the right hand side on the over bridge and provided with LUL style train stop. The number plate is not clear enough to read but is an ER style one of the time.

Aha! Yes - I think that was L 3 after the 1949 resignalling of Liverpool Street (upstairs).
