I was at HoTH tonight ~23:40 Thurs 1st July, and as often happens around this time, there was a southbound engineers train running through platform 5. Normally this has ballast wagons etc, but this time, with L23 leading and L31 on the tail, the consist contained what looked like 2 yellow transplant shunters numbered 12 and 1, of tube loading gauge. I've never seen nor heard of these beasties before. Could someone elaborate please?
[apologies if this is the wrong place for this - couldn't think of anywhere more appropriate]

Sounds to me like Schöma diesels - 12 (named "Melanie") and 1 (named "Britta Lotta").

Some of them are fitted with wedgelock couplers for tube stock and are used as translators for the battery locos, the movement of 1995 stock from Stratford to Highgate and return has been one of their most recent uses. Also can be seen on engineers trains with one at each end on ocasions, though being diesel will restrict their use to open stretches or being hauled by battery locos. See www.schoema.de/
