12 June 1961, first A60 stock in passenger service, so today the earliest start their 50th year of service.
Apparently the first passenger train was units 5004 and 5008.

They'll be even older if you factor in their build date!
Happy 50th to the Cravens A60s.

Apparently the first passenger train was units 5004 and 5008. Are these units still in service? If so it would be quite apt for them to be the last units to be withdrawn in the coming months.

I think it would be best if unit 5066 was the last A stock train to run. That being the last unit on the East London Line and for Shoreditch as well.

Well 5008 is no more in the same form, but 5004 is I think. So theres your compromise; 5004+5066

I can say that Metropolitan line management do intend to comemorate the 50th anniversary of the A stock and have asked staff for thier ideas, i don't think my higher ups would be averse to propsitions from the general public, if anyone wants to know how to forward ideas please get in touch with me

A railtour would be nice, running on those parts of the system that the stock is permitted over. I have a shot of a unit in Barking sidings in a copy of UndergrounD, so can A Stock run to Barking at least in service? Also, oddities such as Uxbridge Sidings, Watford siding...

"Wrap" a 4-car double-ended unit in "unpainted" silver vinyl, red car numbers/LT fleetnames and white-on-black destination blinds.
A rail-tour on the whole of the Met and maybe down to Acton Town!

Sounds great! I'll be there!
Hopefully there will be a silver unit in a few years in preservation!

... and as well as the ELR, a loco hauled trip to Aylesbury - or even Quainton Road? (I can dream!)

Going up the stanmore branch could be an idea for a railtour, especially considering the jubilee might have new signalling by october.

At the risk of this turning into a "fantasy" thread...
Get a 4-car. Stick it on the Chesham branch. Fill it full of people who don't want to see the crumbling A-stock go. Lock both the train and Chalfont junction up and throw away the key ;D ;D
Sorry. Did I say that out loud?
Seriously, it would be quite fitting if they bowed out on their 50th birthday. But maybe allow whatever "tribute" is arranged to be on the line that has been their main home for those 50 years. After all, a day of trotting up and down the Met, would see many more followers given the chance of a last ride than if a handful were taken on a magical mystery tour.

But if other units were in service still at that point the only difference between it and a regular train would be a headboard.
Theres also an historical precident for running rail tours over more unusual parts, such as the 83 tour, the farewell R stock, the farewell CO/CP stock, the 38s leaving tour.
If they do survive past 50 then theres the chance for 2 events. Thing is though A stock 50 is a celebration of the stock and LTs legacy of design more than the line on which it has run, although the two are certainly inseperable in more than a few instances.
Perhaps a compromise that included some of the Mets former territory would be appropriate? Something like Whitechapel - Stanmore might be doable.
A fast Ammersham - City run is always good fun, but its too mundane and normal. Something a bit unusual would surely be more fun and attract a larger following?

I certainly think that whatever is done, a celebration of the stock's 50th birthday should see it running under it's own power.

Like an all-stations Amersham-Aldgate run, or an Uxbridge-Moorgate non-stopping Rayners Lane, West Harrow, Harrow on the Hill, Northwick Park, Preston Rd, and Wembley Park--but stopping at the Met platforms at Neasden and Willesden Green?

Can A stock go up the Stanmore line? I know the line was built by the Met, but I thought that the A stock is wider than any of the old Met coaches. And presumably any new works on the line postwar would have used tube stock clearances.

And presumably any new works on the line postwar would have used tube stock clearances. A stock is unresricted between Finchley Road (except platforms 2 & 3) and Stanmore (except platform 1). Tube height buffers in platform 1 at Stanmore prevent A stock in passenger. The options for access to the Jubilee would either mean a reversal off platform 4 at Finchley Road, a reversal off platform 3 at Neasden or enter traffic for the start of the farewell off platform 3 at Wembley Park. It was way more fun when the trains reached 70mph on the fast stretch. Is there still a train in the timetable that runs non-stop between Finchley Road and Moor Park? A stock had a design speed of 60 and the line speed was generally that subject to lower speeds in certain places, except the Main Lines north of Harrow North Junction which are still 70 for the big railway. There have been no booked Met fast services through Harrow for some years though I seem to recall a period during the 1990's when it operated for at least one timetable, over to you MRFS. Though fast Watfords ran through to North Harrow and fast Uxbridges ran through to West Harrow during this time.

Though fast Watfords ran through to North Harrow and fast Uxbridges ran through to West Harrow during this time. The semi-fasts to/from Uxbridge and Watford served Harrow-on-the-Hill starting in 1975, according to Mike Horne's history of the Met published by Capital Transport.

I was lead to believe A stock was designed for 70mph running when built.
