I happened to travel through the rather swish new Higbury and Islington Station today, and was impressed by the extra space provided at this formerly rather cramped and busy station. In the concourse,I noticed a new emamel sign,by the stairs down to the old Westbound platform. It showed the ELL going to Clapham Junction, but was covered with semi-opaque plastic.....I forgot to check whether it showed Surrey Canal Rd! Also it was nice to see the word "Passenger" being used once more, after years of the powers-that-be trying to change the word to "Customer"

What's wrong with using "Customer"? Are rail passengers not paying for a service?

What's wrong with using "Customer"? Are rail passengers not paying for a service? Ah - you may have missed years of exasperation over the unnecessary rebranding of 'passengers' as 'customers' simply to reflect the politically correct mood of the 'New Britain' in the 1990s, then? It was a nonsense when some bright spark introduced it. It remains so. As for paying for a service, some might say the jury is still out!

What's wrong with using "Customer"? Are rail passengers not paying for a service? I find the use of 'customer' to be demeaning and patronising - I am not in a high street shop and I am bound by a different style of contract. Bravo to seeing/hearing the use of 'passenger' again - where/how was that slugabed?

Totally agree - using the word "customers" for what are clearly "passengers", I have always found this incredibly patronising. I applaud those drivers who still say "would passengers move down inside please."

Now if only the FCC platforms below ground had their NSE branding removed! I doubt that will happen in a hurry - the whole section from Moorgate to Finsbury Park looks tatty and unloved, as it did during its London Transport days. I'm hoping they bring back a weekend and evening service - there is a lot more off peak potential on the line these days. If this happens, I daresay it will get a well deserved spruce up!

It seems to reflect a change in emphasis by The Management as to what the object of the whole organisation: customers are people who pay you money; passengers are people who are to be taken from place to place. Clearly we are both, but the focus seems to have changed.

Bravo to seeing/hearing the use of 'passenger' again - where/how was that slugabed? There was a bloke with an orange jerkin, upon which was written "Passenger Journey Assistant"...... I was torn between being outraged and being delighted, the latter narrowly having the upper hand!

Even more reason once the ELL opens at H&I. At least the Northern City line has modern DOI's!
