I have noticed on the new Central line train indicator boards that the time until the train arrives sometimes displays 'held'. This isn't displayed on the old indicator boards...
What does it mean / what makes the display show it?

This is displayed when a train / trains remain stationary for a certain period of time. Basically, the system detects that the train isn't moving, so displays the "held" message.

AIUI, from a Westinghouse bod that the local site computers progressively update the immediate area's WTT.
If that results in a 'hold' function longer than a minute [1] after the recalculated departure time then the DMIs will display 'held'.
[1] I'm pretty sure that it was a minute and not ¾ or ⅝ min.

I suspect it has something to do with the interfacing between the Westinghouse control system and the DMI controller - the old Westinghouse signs didn't display it.

I suspect it has something to do with the interfacing between the Westinghouse control system and the DMI controller - the old Westinghouse signs didn't display it. Not sure what others think, but in my opinion the Central Line Project indicators are the best on the system. I find them a lot clearer, sharper and easy-to-read compared to the newer Metronet / TLL versions. (But I have a feeling they don't fully comply with disability legislation).

So does held mean there is a delay, i.e. the train is stationary when it shouldn't be?
For example, at Woodford the Hainult train sits in the siding waiting to go to Roding Valley via the eastbound platform. Sometimes, the indicator counts down until 1 minute, then changes to held. But the train is stationary in a siding for 15 odd minutes, so why doesn't it display held for 15 minutes.
Does it change to held when the route has been set and the train is cleared to proceed, but doesn't move?

I remember being "held" between Hanger Lane and North Acton Junction many times on an eastbound journey. I guess it was to wait for an ex-Ealing train to clear the junction.

Trains are always held, I hate it when it says 1 minute...especially at Leyton because it actually takes 2 minutes most of the time. Can I ask what is/was the point of replacing the old black next train indicator boards with the new grey ones? The only thing I can see is that they have an extra line and are able to show the next 3 trains where as the old ones can only show 2. The old boards showed 3 trains, 1 on the first and 2 on the last line soooo....

The old ones also had the capacity to show 3 trains at once, however they were always programmed to show "Central line" or some other message on the 3rd line.
