Colin - are you sure that blue lights would necessitate the removal of the amber ones? Even if/when the ERU gain blue lights, they will not be used for all jobs. On those jobs that are not suitable for the use of blue lights, it may still be beneficial to display amber lights as at present. Well it would be a lot easier to swap the lens covers/light bars rather than having to install a completely new additional set of lights. It is quite feasible that they could use both, but aside from covering for dodgy parking, I'm not so sure that amber lights would provide any meaningful benefit. Surely it's as simple as this: it's either an emergency requiring Blue lights, or it's not an emergency which requires no lights? I would just finish by mentioning that light bars with both blue and amber lights are available. Well yes, but like I say, I can't see the point of having both.

They sometimes have them on flashing yellow when parked up, just in the same way as refuse lorries (not LU ones!).
I know of a preserved railway that until a few years ago had a fire and first responder service using blue light vehicles!

The ERU orange lights are supposed to be used when stationary where the vehicle might be considered a hazard (i.e. parked outside a station on a main road). Their only other use in the UK is for slow-moving vehicles (milk floats, dumper trucks, diggers etc) or vehicles towing; neither of which applies to the ERU. I have seen ERU lorries using these on the move (i.e. at the recent Mile End one-under) but this is up to the individual driver I guess. Chatting to one of the ERU duty managers recently (the same one who told me gaining blue light status was getting nearer) he said he didn't use the ambers whilst moving rather put on the white strobes in the light bar which seemed to get people out of the way!
