Why does a four car 378 need six 3rd rail pick up shoes? (Two on each end plus another two on the extra 'fourth' carriage?

I think you will find this is due the an increase in power demand from these units air con and the like.

All class 378s have four shoes on each side. 4-car 378s have shoegear on the first and last bogies, and the two in the middle. On 3-car units, one DMOS has shoegear on both bogies.
