Noticed unit 5118-5119 at Northwood yesterday looked like it had its de-icing gear removed. The sleet brush bracket had gone from the bogie, and top up pipe appeared to have gone. Can anyone confirm? Is this a bad sign?

Can anyone confirm? Is this a bad sign? Well we won't be needing them next winter ;D The overnight arrangements covering sleet working for Winter 2009/2010 officially end tomorrow evening, and it is hoped that that is the end of the cold snap until later in the year. There are plenty of other equipped units, and hopefully by next winter we'll have a few S-stocks as well. Don't be too down-hearted Metman. They've got to go at some time, but I do agree that going a piece at a time will mean they will have a very visible lingering demise.

I don't see the point of removing the equipment though! Surely leaving it in place (just in case) would be wise!
Also why are loads of signals being replaced? Northwood down road starter has been replaced, as has platform 6 wrong road reverser at Harrow!

I think the technical terms comprise such classics as "taken off" or "decommissioned" or "not put back." Metman is no stranger to the stock, and I am sure he has seen (or not seen in this case) something amiss.

I know this isn't really related but, I noticed that 5118 had rather squeky brakes, could this be as a result of the de-icing gear being decommissioned?

Not an expert but why would squeaky brakes and decommissioned de-icing equipment be connected? If your car had squeaky brakes theres a proper reason.

Was thinking that. Probably needs new brake blocks.

I am sure both units 5090/1 and 5118/9 were (still are?) fitted with snow blowing equipment and haven't had de-icing shoe beams on the trailers (6090 and 6118) for many years.
They were 'regulars' on the Chesham branch (one at a time, of course!) during bad weather and impending bad weather.

The shoebeam with the delivery pipe on was still inplace. Can you tell me a little more about the snow blowing equipment?

Also why are loads of signals being replaced? Northwood down road starter has been replaced, as has platform 6 wrong road reverser at Harrow! As Colin has quite rightly mentioned sighting, owing to slightly longer s stock all siganls moved to give slightly longer berths. Also includes at Harrow platform 5 s/b starter, platform 4 fixed red. At Northwood s/b fixed red and n/b starter, at Rickmansworth n/b starter, s/b shunt to North Sidings, n/b wrong road starter (which also now includes a co-acter) and the s/b starter and shunt. There is likely to be more in due course and all sidings are having new retarders fitted to lengthen the berth for the same reason.

Nothing, and i REPEAT Nothing has been removed form the current de icing fleet. The fleet is in full complete working order.

So how's about we ask for a full fleet, say tonight, all filled up, fully working and all available without sticking 2 units on 1 train. That would be a "last checked" status sheet dated when? I'm sure you know what I mean

Is this a bad sign? Just come off the last ever programme lift at Neasden depot. Thus making it one of the last units heading for the scrapyard.
