I noticed a Chesham train go through from Chalfont today at about twenty past three.
I was just wondering why this happened, as there isn't usually a through train for another two hours.

There has been an intermittent signalling problem affecting platform 2 at Amersham since SOT this morning. I believe some of the booked Amersham reversers are being diverted to Chesham as they are limited to 1 platform for reversing Mets and running through Down Chilterns at Amersham.

Another 8 months and it will be happening all day long and in wanting to be "connected" to the main network, Chesham will then begin to share in any service disruption ;D

I really think they could come up with a better idea rather than having through trains. As a Chesham resident I don't think through trains are the right idea.
It'd be nice to have a heritage route with the A stock still running as the shuttle.

Well the vast majority of your fellow local residents disagree - it was their voice, according to LU, that led to LU deciding on the change.

Which, as Colin refers to, is probably what the rest of the Chesham residents will say come that first "Delays to Chesham due to a signal failure at Moorgate" message. Such problems rarely cause delays to Chesham. It'd be nice to have a heritage route with the A stock still running as the shuttle. Which, if it happened, would mean it would be operated by someone else (as we are a transport company and not a museum or tourist company) and you would then have to pay for the journey separately.

Of course,Metcontrol, you're absolutely right, and sadly this is what has happened to LT since it was forced to pretend to be a private company. I'm sure a weekend service with a premium fare would be popular and possibly profitable. Surely it's not beyond the wit of man to organise this? When I lived in Vienna, the Tramways ran a service on the Ring using Heritage stock, and I believe normal tickets were valid. Now THAT was a public service with an eye on its history. Apologies for thread drift.

i can live with some delays - they are the same delays that often leave me waiting at chalfont for 25 mins for the shuttle to come back as it is - at least i'd have a 50-50 chance of being on the direct train in the first place.

It would be nice if the bay at Chesham could be reinstated. At least a more frequent service could be run. The stock would have to be limited to 4 cars of course, or the bay(s) be lengthened?
Heritage stock should be run on the line at various times, I'd like to see in 5 years, Q, A60 and 1938 stock all run a service. Whether it is public service or not is up for debate - I know a few people in Chesham!!

The mention of Heritage Stock running on the Chesham Branch reminds me of the the couple of occasions the three car 'Craven Unit' took over the passenger service on some Sundays in May and June 1997. The first privately owned Underground Stock to run in passenger service since 1933? It also ran in passenger service during the last 'Steam On The Met' event I seem to remember.

The first privately owned Underground Stock to run in passenger service since 1933? This reminded me that some 1938 Stock for the Northern Line had 'PROPERTY OF THE LNER' to in theory signify ownership with the Northern Line extension. This theoretical ownership was of course cancelled in 1948 with the formation of the British Transport Commission that owned all the nationalised railways and London Transport. The ACV railcars ran on trials on the Epping-Ongar around 1951 and also on the Chesham branch but were not underground stock.

Forgot to include the quote! Apologies! I am sure that retained A Stock to run the Chesham [shuttles] would be well-received in some quarters, but regrettably the evidence from running our local Lymington branch as a sort of preserved electric railway have proved how impractical that can be. Spare parts availabilty and the costs of non-standard stock with limited running availability have weighed against them, so now from May they will be gone. Years ago there was a sole through Eastleigh-Lymington Pier service as the stock came from Eastleigh depot. In many respects it would be advantageous to have through services so as to better-serve the new Isle of Wight ferries but it will probably never happen. Otherwise the same required change at Brockenhurst is required (as at Chalfont for the Chesham branch service), with the added problem that so many main line services do not connect. Both branches are around the same length. Apologies once again if this is OT!
