The way to solve this problem is surely to use the old Thameslink tracks at Moorgate for a new Metropolitan sidings to stable trains if this were to ever ocur in the future again.

Sidings? Maybe. Metropolitan Line sidings? Maybe not As far as I have seen / heard, being able to use them in scenarios as above, you would still need to turn the trains back from heading westbound towards Baker Street. Access would be from an eastbound direction.
