Didn't know exactly what to call the subject there Just thought I'd mention this week they (whoever they were) have finished encasing that previously ugly monstrosity of White City sidings ventilation extract plant at ground level on the corner of Wood Lane and Ariel Way, between the bus station, the H&C overbirdge and opposite the BBC staff car park. In place of a rather ugly dull grey box that looked if it had been detached from a battleship we now have a four faced verical weed patch. That is the only way I can describe it, they took about 3 months to clad all around the grey box and cover all four faces with plants that look to me just like weeds. I'm sure the gardeners / botanists will be along to advise what it is supposed to be, but if it turns out anything like the similar plants along the back side ''southern terrace'' part of Westfield, then vertical weed patch IMHO it is. -- Nick

Yes, I know what you mean. That ventilation thingy is quite an eyesore, but, in the greater scheme of things what an improvement things are in that area. In the past Wood lane has always been a dump, an always being dug up and re paved dump. These days though it's all changed to a very pleasant urban environment. I especially like the way the old power house has been renovated and given a new lease of life. It blends in really well. Besides, when I'm on a long meal break, it's nice to pop up the road and buy me a nice new release Blu Ray at HMV. I'll spray that carbuncle with weed killler for you next time I go up there.

Are there any pictures of this available anywhere? I thought the old powerhouse and the area that used to form the original loop and station behind it was sold to the BBC but I haven't been near or by there for almost 15 years now.

When I first noticed the base for the weed bed going in, I thought, fantastic, they are gong to be sensible and reconstruct the old Wood Lane station facade in it's original location; rather leaving it rotting in a field in bits. Nope that required imagination.... Silly me!

My understanding is that one half of the power house how houses, appropriately enough, Wood Lane Substation for the Central Line, replacing the earlier substation nearby whose site was required for the shopping centre.

The plants are probably weed-like so they cost less to maintain. Getting some local kids to graffitti on the ventilation shaft would have been better, I actually liked how out of place and brutal it was and something like a mural would have given it a bit of soul.

how out of place and brutal it was To a certain extent I have to agree - it was so most brutal (that was a word I was looking for in my original post) a lump it could almost have passed for any old Tate Modern exhibit. Ref. other comments, at least I'm not the only one who thinks its weeds, well for now at any rate. Facade re-creating old station I had not thought of, but I did think it could have have some railway display use, not sure what - clad it in cab end fronts from 67 and A60 ((yes yes I know they aren't ready for withdrawal yet but we are not far off)) ? -- Nick

I thought both halves are now bus garage but now I think about it I don't know. You know, I've walked by there nearly every day for 12 mo now and I've only once quickly looked inside the one nearest Wood Lane. I must go and look. IMHO the power house would have been better off converted for the SSR service control, instead of the Hammersmith site, but I guess I'm not the first to suggest that or other rail uses.. -- Nick

A lovely day for a stroll and some shopping at HMV's.........Considering Wood Lane always used to be a muddy trench. It certainly is an amazing transformation when you consider how run down the area was for many years.
Has anyone got any pics of the old White City Depot - these seem to be quite rare.

Cirrus has a knack of appearing much lower and deeper than it actually is. (Nice effect 'though) As an amateur pilot I have a fair grasp of these effects. Just last Sunday, at my airfield we were discussing how some Cirrus looked like it was mixed with some cumulus that was at about 4000ft.

It now looks like a poorly disguised WW2 installation.
Interesting that Westfield are having to put signs up advertising the restaurants on the Southern Terrace. I think they really messed up that part of the centre despite it being the only real attempt to connect the place with the rest of the area.
