As I stated elsewhere, this is a train so bizarre it just has to be modelled. I only have two pictures of the wagons involved which, although pretty much perfect for getting the detail on the wagons right, they do not give an overall view of the train when it was in service. The pictures I have are the one of TLC2 in 'Workhorses of the London Underground' and a picture of most of the train in operation in the 1959 Ian Allan London Transport ABC. The ABC picture shows the train formation as follows. Battery Loco, Tube Match wagon (MW537 I think), TLC1, TLC2, then either a 10 ton Ballast wagon or another Match wagon. Anything else is out of picture.
My questions are these. Would the train have a Battery Loco each end or would the other end have had a Ballast Motor for conveying the staff? Why would a Match Wagon be necessary to couple to a Battery loco or was it a semi-fixed formation that had to be able to couple to a Ballast Motor? How many vehicles were used in the formation?
The inspiration for modelling this train is the fact that the two dedicated 'Fluffer' wagons, TLC1/2, were converted from MET 10 tonners in 1948. I have just found out that the Hornby 3-plank wagon (R6298 or R6338) needs virtually no work to transform it into a MET 10 ton Ballast wagon. From that base any of the conversions is possible. I have nearly finished one converted 10 tonner, the MET Breakdown Crane runner No BD704 (model to be seen at Acton on Saturday). For a multi-thumbed modeller like me it was refreshignly easy. A 'Fluffer' Wagon should be almost as easy to do. The Match wagons were also converted 10 tonners so this train shouldn't take as long as my other stock to finish! .
Thanks in advance.
