Hey folks, Just came across this link: has a link to a .tif file of the original plans of the C&SLR - as designed by Greathead himself. To say I'm stunned is an understatement!

That's great. So many of these sort of plans got lost through fire during both wars. The section north of Borough was to become the City & Brixton Rly after the C&SLR was extended along a new alignment to Moorgate..

You might also be interested to know that a reprint of Greathead's work The City And South London Railway: With Some Remarks Upon Subaqueous Tunneling By Shield And Compressed Air has been published. It's from Kessinger Publishing, and I purchased my copy from ABE Books for about £7. It is a true reproduction of the original pages, including the in-line drawings. My main complaint is that they haven't reproduced the plates, which contain (in my view) the most interesting plans and diagrams. However, given that an original copy of the work is c.£90, it's still a bargain. And if anyone has scans of the plates, they'd be most gratefully received... [My other complaint is the American spelling of 'Tunneling' on the cover].

Following a rather lengthy absence from this forum, I found this thread and can tie a few pieces together. The drawings that angelislington links to are a small part of the plates that abe complains (quite rightly) are missing from the reprint of Greathead's paper 'The City And South London Railway: With Some Remarks Upon Subaqueous Tunneling By Shield And Compressed Air'. For the record, this was a paper presented to the Institution of Civil Engineers in 1895. The other illustrations include excellent cross-sections of stations and carriages. There are also some rather nice plans including a loco and the layout at Stockwell depot in another paper to the same group by Edward Hopkinson in 1893 entitled 'Electric Railways: The City & South London Railway'. Hopefully we might see that reprinted one day.
