I was asked why the cars can be so cold. I asked someone at work. They told me that they thought that it was because when people leave the coffee cups and cans of drink, they spill into the vents. This leaves a nasty burning smell. The Alstrom guys then disconnect the heaters so the burning smell stops. Thus, no heaters.
Does anyone have any other ideas? Serious answers only please.

Don't forget most weekends somewhere on the Jubilee there are some trains stabled for nearly 3 days with no traction current in near freezing conditions.

I am not stock trained on the 96ts, so I have no idea how their heating system works, but if it's in anyway similar to other stocks it could be as simple as: - Driver has the heating system turned off in the cab
- MCB tripped out
- Fuse on car blown
- Earth Fault on heater system
- Missing pick up shoes (traction current supply needed to run heaters)
- Some other fault affecting power supply to the heating system
To name a few.....

To name a few..... I worked on the 96TS project in the 1990's. The Heat and Vent system uses all forced air heating, so it doesn't work and trips out if the fans stop working. The units are all in the seats and deliver the warm air (or fresh air in summer) out of vents at the bottom of the windows. There were all sorts of development problems including EMC issues, solved by a mod and poor quality fan motors. I suspect the fan motors have always remained the weak link. Perhaps someone close to their maintenance and current engineering can tell us.
