;D ;D I'm one very happy lad! My job description came today, and since the H&S visit was passed I am going to be an engineering assistant at Northfields Depot for two weeks as of June 20th . There are a couple of things on my job description which I'm not sure about, so if anyone can offer an explanation that'd be rather good: - What is an area 'A' course? I have to pass this before the placement starts.
- This may sound a bit odd. I know I need to wear boots, but does anyone know if these are provided or do I need to buy my own? This isn't clear from the job description.
Cheers, Seth

Cheers, Seth Fantastic Seth - I hope you enjoy it. I'd imagine the course is to do with safety around the depot - where you can go, what you have to watch out for, appropriate procedures etc. I'm sure someone can add more to that? As for the any Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) I'm sure this will all be provided - there are quite strong standards that it must meet. I'd give them a quick phone call - I'm sure they'd be glad for you to show the initiative to ask! Dave

I believe that area 'A' is the shed roads, usually where there are pits with overhead leads. Depots are split into (IIRC) three areas, A, B and C. Area A is as described above, areas B & C are those areas with less hazards. I can't find the books with the details at the moment, and my depot protection master certificate expired in February so that is my excuse for not remembering them all ;D ;D

Hope you enjoy your work experience, Seth. I think DD is right, I'd give them a ring to find out about safety wear.
I did work experience at BR in York back in 1987 and enjoyed it thoroughly.

area a is the shed roads where the power for the trains is via a overhead trolley lead
area b is the area in the shed usually the cleaning side of it where the conductor rails are at ground level
area c is the area other then those listed above upto the depot limits
hope they are right as i am a depot protection master
all PPE is supplied from northfields themselves so dont buy it and at the end of it its yours to keep

Don't forget what you can do with any hi vis jackets 'lying' around.
