Coupled end to end via two battery locos, Ruislip Depot had a visitor. Unfortunately the three car 96TS was kept away from it's tired looking cousin on the Central line. Being stabled on the Transplant roads, behind the Central line train operator training rooms therefore no photo ops with the 92TS'. It was in for TBTC mods and testing, as Ruislip 31rd test track has the loops installed for their ATO testing as well as ours. LCN 96106 - 96506 www.flickr.com/photos/routemaster/

Nice pics!
What is the (air line?) going into the unit and where does it go? seems odd that a connection like that isn't dealt with at the outside of the unit.
Was the unit being hauled dead, or can the battery locos run in multiple with it?

The Jubilee Line unit is between two Schoma Diesel Locomotives the air line goes through the 96 Stock to the other Schoma, the Battery Locomotives then haul the complete train. The 96 stock is not under power as it can not operate under power on other lines, only the Jubilee Line.

Makes sense (albeit a bit annoying that it can't run on other lines - signalling interfaces?) also, just to confirm - is the rake therefore [schoma] [96stock] [schoma] [battery loco] [battery loco]? seems a lot of locos for 3 cars of stock...

The rake is Battery Loco- Schoma- 3 car 96 Stock- Schoma - Battery Loco.
The Schoma Locos are also not under power, they are the only locos with a coupler to fit the 96 Stock.

Why were the 96 stock built with a coupler format that is not compatible with the battery locos?

Isn't the Schoma just being used as a match wagon?
IIRC after the events of July 2005, a brake van from the Heritage Collection was required to act as a match wagon between C stock and the battery loco.

(They're not mine though so sadly won't post them). Someone else on here was a Silver on it though!

Why were the 96 stock built with a coupler format that is not compatible with the battery locos? Oh dear what a question? There are many such questions regarding incompatibility. Running the same stock with the same signalling systems on all tube lines would seem to make sense, no doubt soemone has a smart answer as to why it isn't so. I have an answer which I doubt anyone wants to hear, suffice it to say it includes planning and money or lack thereof and internal competition!

Why were the 96 stock built with a coupler format that is not compatible with the battery locos? Because Battery Locos have Buckeye couplers to couple to engineers wagons and not passenger stock couplers.

I guess this was the first visit of a 96 to Ruislip since its commissioning in the 1996-97 or so time frame.

No,that's the 5th Highgate-Ruislip-SMD move since the test track was commissioned. In order they were 062-061,064-063,118-117,106-105 & now 080-005.

Because Battery Locos have Buckeye couplers to couple to engineers wagons and not passenger stock couplers. Interesting. I'd have thought some clever chaps would have knocked up some kind of adaptor to mount to the front of passenger stock to save the bother of having to get in place (and move) essentially dead weight in the form of the redundant locomotives.

When the need arises to couple stock with incompatible coupling systems, most railways use barrier wagons (more logically called translator wagons in US parlance I believe) - see for example the deliveries of S stock from Derby to London. I would have thought that LU would have a couple of redundant wagons in its engineering fleet to convert for this purpose. They needn't even be redundant I suppose - just have two wagons with buckeye couplers on their outer ends and whatever the passenger stock uses (wedgelock?) on their inner ends. They would need to stay together for engineering work, but that shouldn't be too hard to arragne I wouldn't have thought.
