In Rails Through the Clay it says that from about 1927 to 1930 there were passing loops at Brent Cross to allow a morning express southbound and an evening express northbound to pass a local all-stop train. The dates and details seemed pretty detailed.
However in Joe Brown's London Railway Atlas, 2nd Edition, he shows a couple of dashed lines for these loops saying "planned but never realized" or something similar.
My question: did these loops really exist? Are there any WTT references around to prove one way or the other whether an express could pass a local at Brent Cross?
I know some one or more of you can definitively answer this. If there were loops I would like to let Joe know so he can change this in the 3rd edition down the road.

There were definitely passing loops. I have the following:
04.01.25 - both passing loop roads at Brent commissioned. 23.08.36 - Abolition of passing loops at Brent. Area converted to automatic working. 16.01.37 - Brent signal cabin closed and demolished soon after. The area was required for lengthening Brent island platform northwards to take 9-car trains which began in 1937 - but that's another story!!
My WTT notes state the following:
In WTT No.125 from 4 May 1925, just one southbound train was booked to run via the loop, being the 06.40 from Colindale to Charing Cross (06.41 on Saturdays). In the opposite direction the 18.30 Morden to Edgware via Bank was the only train scheduled to operate via the loop and there was no comparable working during the Saturday lunch time rush hour.
WTT No.130 - 13.09.26 - Just two northbound services were scheduled to use the Brent loop, being the 19.19 from Kennington to Colindale via Charing Cross on Mondays to Fridays and the 14.32 Morden to Edgware via Bank on Saturdays. There were no scheduled southbound workings.
WTT No.132 – 06.12.26 - The trains booked to run via the loop at Brent comprised 19.42 Kennington – Colindale via Charing Cross Mondays to Fridays and 14.55 Kennington – Colindale via Charing Cross on Saturdays.
WTT No.133 of 12.06.27 was the first WTT that actually saw the Brent loop operated as planned – with overtaking services, although this was limited to one southbound train Mondays to Saturdays. The trains scheduled via the loop were as follows:
MONDAYS TO SATURDAYS 06.36 Colindale – Kennington via Charing Cross, non-stopping Brent. 08.58 Edgware – Kennington via Charing Cross. This train ran non-stop from Edgware to Golders Green (and also non-stopped Mornington Crescent and Warren Street), overtaking the 08.59 (09.00 Saturdays) Colindale – Kennington via Charing Cross at Brent. 06.23 Golders Green – Colindale, non-stopping Brent. MONDAYS TO FRIDAYS 18.58 Tooting Broadway – Colindale via Bank, non-stopping Brent. SATURDAYS 14.55 Kennington – Colindale via Charing Cross, non-stopping Brent.

Thank you, Reganorak. Very detailed information and much appreciated. I passed this along - with credit to you - to Joe Brown.

I wonder if mrfs42 has some potential scans to assist.
Might be worth dropping him a PM.......

I do indeed! But I'm being dragged down the pub by angelislington again - this interrupted a post on a signalling forum last night. ;D There were loose points at both ends and one signal on each loop road - when I return from the watering hole in Palace St. I will dig out and resize the image, web it up. When I've done that I'll move the thread into historical as it belongs more there. EDIT - found it, but I'm being 'looked at'! (so I'll update later)

Thanks all for the info. Several other folks had brought the error to Joe Brown's attention back late last year and he had rushed some updated PDFs to the printers for later printings of the second edition - which some might have.
He was very appreciative of Reganorak's info that I passed on to him. He said that the 3rd Edition in 2011 will have dates in more detail down to day and month so this would help him.
I will forward the always-informative mrfs42's picture on to Joe in case he doesn't have this - and metman's photo links.
I am guessing that since he is an LU employee, he knows a lot of you folks (and vice versa) anyway.
