Wonderful. Of greater interest to me was the 1940 stock working as a single motor car!

Escalator question. I have read a number of places that original escalators required a 90 degree hop to get off of them. Any movies of that? Seems like an accident waiting to happen.

I think there is one or two rather grainy videos about it somewhere. Bumper Harris, a man with a wooden leg [allegedly], who rode all day, showing people how to use them. A google search for the man might reveal something...

I've definitely seen still photos of these early escalators.....I seem to remember that they were all replaced by the Second War. Essentially, the handrail ended on one side before the end of the escalator,on the flat, and there was an angled barrier across the moving treads, which guided passengers to take a sideways step onto solid ground.

Re the one-coach train, I have been trying to find out a date when one-coach operation was abolished on the W&C but without success to date. However, at least this wonderful film narrows it down a bit, to some time after the film was made. I certainly travelled on the W&C around that time off-peak on a one-car train.

One car working was still in force in the WTT that came in on 17/6/63.
MF - SoT - 7.18 (ABC x2 each); after 11.48 B ran as one car, and A/C as two car until peak after 3.24pm and went up to full strength, 2-car only after 7.24pm
Sat - SoT - 7.18 1 car, each train doing 2 trips (plus A doing a third), then until CoT 5 car.

The 2 car train would have been made up of M-M I guess.

The 2 car train would have been made up of M-M I guess. You're correct - 1940 stock normally operated as 2-car sets M-M in off-peak times and 5-car sets M-T-T-T-M during peak periods during the 70's and 80's (I'm sure M will be able to provide more accurate dates) . They were certainly an experience to ride on for sure!

They must have been a right devil to shunt into formations for the peaks! The two cars would have to split and then perform a series of shuts to sandwich their 3 trailers!

There were 12 Ms and 16Ts, so there were at least two spare Ms (and one T) even if five five-car sets were in use - and I think they normally only ran four.

It was around that time (1962 in fact) that Norman Wisdom was filmed at Bank in ON THE BEAT:
