I'd guess the inset in D is from the Museum at Covent Garden.

The third inset is either of the replicas 'North Star' or 'Iron Duke'. If it's 'Iron Duke' then one of the type held the world land speed record (unofficially as it was at the time) for a while in the 1870's (from memory). With 'Mallard' (still the world steam speed record holder) and the prototype HST (set a then world record for Diesel traction of 143mph in the 1970's) maybe the link between the inserts is speed records.

Glyn gets the point for identifying inset 3:Iron Duke [Chris M] DLP70 gets the point for C: Walthamstow Central - stairs from bus station [Chris M] DStock7080 gets the point for D: Tooting Broadway - platform 2 [Rincew1nd] A is still to be got: here's a clue Station A: As is Inset D: You still need to find the link between the stations and the insets - there are two separate links. Images are clickable for bigger versions.

For inset D I'll go for one of the items in storage at the Museum Depot. Those racks look familiar.
No idea about the link.
