I had to head over to Bond Street, from Liverpool Street, late this afternoon for a work meeting - enroute whilst stationary in Oxford Circus, passengers were told to leave the station due to an emergency and ouR train headed west. I arrived back at Bond Street just after 6pm and discovered that Oxford Circus was still closed, with trains not stopping. The queue to get through the ticket/oyster gates started at the entrance of the station on the lower ground floor of the West One Shopping Centre. It took 10 minutes to get through the barriers with a lot of shoving, pushing and mumbling from those present. Once down on the Central Line eastbound platform we were told over the platform PA that trains were not stopping due to congestion in the ticket hall... a train entered and passed through the station not depositing any passengers, but just as equally not allowing even more to get on due to Bond Street being so busy... making the station busier... the next train didn't stop because the station was busier... making Bond street even more busier... I think you can see where I'm going hereI cannot comment on what as happening on other lines, however the Central Line SA announced at one point that it was management making this decision.... I took that to mean he wasn't too happy with the call to apparently intentionally make the station even busier than it could have been...

I have noticed congestion at Bond Street has been a problem before.
I tried to leave the station a few weeks ago, and the area at the top of the escalators was very congested, as people were queuing to get out the gates. At the same time, people we queuing to get into the gates and down to the platforms. I couldn't work out if they had momentarily stopped people exiting, to clear the congestion, which caused a backlog of people to leave. It was quite anxiety provoking, because once up the escalators, there is nowhere to go except into the sea of people to leave.
Subsequently, the area leading directly to the street was a solid bunch of people right the way from street level down to the ticket barriers. Half were trying to leave, and half were coming in. The West One shopping centre direction was totally empty. Even the emergency exit gate, at the top of the escalators, would be ineffective as there was a sea of people on the other side of it.
Why can't they make a strict one way system in these situations, i.e the area leading directly to the stairs + street is exit only, and the only way to enter the station is via the West One shopping centre? That way, there would be less pushing and shoving and a clear exit from the station could be maintained.
