I just caught an Epping train from the eastbound platform at Stratford.
At the front end of the platform, about half a carriage up the platform, I saw a hole in the centre of a running rail, about 3cm in height and of variable width but about 1cm at its widest.
I tried to photograph it but my flash kept coming on, and the trains were frequent, so I abandoned.
How could such a hole appear? It almost looked like something had cut into it by accident, but I don't see how this would be possible. Would it be of any significance?

Do you mean on the head (where the wheels actually pass) or the web (the bit that rises vertically from the foot)? Can't work out what you mean by a hole having a height! (Surely they have a depth?)
