It opened on 10 January 1863 as Portland Road? Don't know about the name, I was under the impression that it was always Great Portland Street, but you are correct, it coincides with it's original opening date in 1863.

In a footnote in "London's Lost Tube Schemes" (buy Antony Badsey-Ellis) (footnote 6, page 292) it is noted that the name was changed from Portland Road to Great Portland Street on March 1st, 1917.

Is it something to do with the station being on the first part of the underground to open, on 10th January 1863?
