I came across this sound when i was looking through the sound folder of the 1996 Stock for BVE 4. Can anybody shed some light on what this sound is for and when it is used on the real Jubilee Line?

It was the "rear cab Clear" indication klaxon. It was used when stepping back was in operation at CX. Last used in the late 80s I seem to remember.

Ok, can you explain to me about "rear cab clear" and why it was fitted to the 1996 Stock?

Stepping back & rear cab clear:
I drive my train into Charing Cross, where it terminates. I open the doors, make appropriate PA's, gather my belongings and shutdown the train and exit the cab.
Due to the tight turnaround times in the current timetable, it has been decided the stepping back will take place. This means, once I am out of my cab, I will press the 'rear cab clear' plunger which sounds a klaxon - this lets a driver at the other end of the train that I am out, and it is now his train - he will start to prepare it and take it into service.
I will then walk to the other end of the platform, and be ready to get into the next train, once the rear cab clear klaxon has gone off.
The idea of this is that it is quicker for you to get out and give your train to another driver than it is for you to key out, walk the length of the train, key back in and prepare for service - (and if you've still got any left, take your 4 mins turnaround time)!
The rear cab clear indication means that the driver at the other end is out, you can now get in and prepare to depart.
Stepping back means getting off of your train and getting on the one behind. It is used as it means trains can run more frequently without having to wait for drivers to finish their 4 minute turnaround time.
Apologies for any mistakes there ;D

A similar thing still happens at Aldgate in the peak hours when stepping back is employed. You will hear a buzzer and a lit sign will pop up near the starters on platforms 2 and 3.

Stepping back didn't happen an awful lot at CHX - it was used in the first three WTTs then there was a gap before it happened again.

Thank you for your wealth of information. Is this klaxon not used anymore now since Charing X is closed on the Jubilee Line since the late 80's? If thats the case, why are the 1996 Stock fitted with klaxons or is it a standard klaxon fitted to all trains? Im hoping to get out of the country (Ireland) for the first time to London for a holiday and im planning to travel every line of the Underground i love it so much!

There is no klaxon fitted to the trains. The klaxons are on the north end of the platforms. This was to advise the relieving driver the rear cab is clear.
Re read Memorex's post, that explains things pretty well.

Doesn't the Bakerloo line use multiple stepping-back? I thought I saw that on a V125 DVD. But I may be mistaken.

If you go to Bank on the Waterloo and City line during the peak you will see 'stepping back' in operation. The T/Op operates a plunger when exiting the cab which in turn illuminates a 'Rear cab clear' sign at the headwall. Its pretty much the same that has already been quoted in this thread already.

And at Brixton too, I wondered what on earth the noise was when I first heard the klaxon.

I use the W&C quite often and stepping back does operate there. It's done so quickly it takes intending passangers by surprise - people are still walking down the platform when the train takes off back again - "How did the driver change ends so quickly?" or even " the train's gone off without the driver". I don't think there's a klaxon though. I think I've seen a "rear cab empty" plunger at Elephant (Bakerloo), or am I mistaken?

There isn't a klaxon at Bank, but there might be one at Waterloo where step back working occurs in the siding. Both Elephant and Piccadilly Circus on the Bakerloo Line have Rear Cab Clear plungers, Elephant having them since resignalling in 1991 and Picc Circus since 1996.

I would imagine the Picc Circus one doesn't get used much!

I would imagine the Picc Circus one doesn't get used much! It was installed for the temporary closure between Piccadilly Circus and Elephant & Castle for tunnel strengthening. Another RCC installation that doesn't get used is at Morden - stepping back at Morden was withdrawn from WTT52 commencing 27th January 2008, and (thankfully!) there are no plans to re-introduce it, most staff feel it was a major cause of Northern Line unreliability.

There isn't a klaxon at Bank, but there might be one at Waterloo where step back working occurs in the siding. There was never any plungers in the depot at Waterloo, it was unnessary, as the step back room is set in the middle of the train and the drivers can clearly see each other, as there was no passengers around.

I spent a brief spell in the old entry/exit panel box at Waterloo as an apprentice, and was shown around the depot. There was an RCC plunger for the reversing siding which illuminated an RCC visual on or near the outlet signal. At the time the previous system was still working which was a klaxon operated by one of those outdoor light switches, used until the 2006 closure I believe. I guess it was put in after you left the Central Jim?
