Further to the above, I was under the impression it was after the 59ts was introduced, so perhaps earlier than 1963.
I ought to get my Dad to join here, he's a wealth of knowledge......

Two units (10009 and 10010) were repainted grey (or silver, or whatever) in 1963 and the third (10011) in 1965. I would suggest the photo is of the third in almost ex-(Acton) Works condition.

Why were they painted silver?
The only other steel-bodied stock was so treated was formed in mixed formations of steel and aluminium vehicles in the same train - (like the R stock, or the trailers used with the 1960 stock).

The official line was "to match their appearance to the new trains [1962 Tube Stock] on the Central Line". I think they were anxious to be rid of 'red' as the Pre-1938s were a liability and the aluminium look was new and modern.
Of course in 1963, there were still trains of 1959 Stock on the Central (until mid-1964).
Unfortunately the 1935s became very unreliable and towards the end of 1966 they were withdrawn and 1962 Tube Stock substituted. The 1960 Tube Stock also did a short spell before ATO conversion on the Epping-Ongar line.
On the other hand mixed livery R Stock trains operated for many years on the District, from the very first aluminium car in 1952 until red was eliminated on R Stock in 1968.

Of course some R stock trains (those with R47 NDMs) were all-steel. When they were reformed from 4+2(+2) to 5+2 or 3+2+2, were the NDMs that were moved (2nd position cars, I believe) kept in trains of the same type (i.e. would a steel R47 car be moved to another unit with R47 NDMs, and similarly for aluninium R49 and R59 cars, or was the opportunity taken to even up the weights of the units by mixing steel R47 and aluminium R49 in the same unit?

Looking at my list of 5-car units, it seems that most of the newly formed units had like-for-like stock. There were just a small few that had a different 'build' inserted as the middle 'A' car..
