I recall seeing some TOPS/class numbers on the D78 and C69/77 somewhere, because they ran on NR track (wimbledon). What are they?
(As I understand it TOPS and BR Class numbers are the same).
Is this corrrect, or is it only '38 and '92 stock which has this (483 and 482)?

D78, C69, and the Bakerloo's 1972 Stocks are nominally classed as 499 by Railtrack in 1994, probably due to Privatisation. Have no idea if LUL stock was classified during BR days.

Okay, thanks. A little side question: did the 38ts use 483 on the NCL, as they use that on Isle of Wright?

It wouldn't have needed a TOPS number as the NCL was LT infrastructure whilst the 38ts was running. Perhaps Eirikho was refering to the rolling stock transfer trips to and from the Northern City Line, which would indeed have passed over BR infrastructure. Having said that I doubt these would have resulted in the 38TS being given TOPS numbers as these movements ceased in 1975 at which time implementation of the TOPS system was by no means complete for BR owned rolling stock, never mind trains belonging to other railway companies.

I think the TOPS number discussions were in connection with the displays on the Wimbledon branch, which were train reporting numbers, rather than TOPS location codes.
ISTR that 38TS only gained TOPS classification when transferred to the IoW - running along the top end of the Bakerloo, there was no need as it was all self-contained on local train descriptions. TOPS (was) is only really of use when you want to find the wagon-in-the-haystack. I *think* it may have been extended to cover a lot more things as part of the progression towards TRUST, RIMINI and other programs of a similar ilk.
