This is one of the BEST books about the London Underground that has ever been written. I can't believe I survived this long without a copy in my collection.
It's so amazing to read about the early stuff involving the rise of the deep-level system and all of the social, political and cultural influences on it. Great stuff!

It is THE essential book for anyone interested in the development of London and its tube railways. I have both the original and second edition. For choice, the second edition has the more up to date information.

Which edition have you got: white cover or black? GREEN! The edition that I have was published in 2007, and the front pages state that it is the original 1962 text, corrected and reset in the original font.

I bought my copy (Second impression 1964) brand new in 1966 for 50 Shillings. The colour is beige with a wide red stripe on the spine. The dust cover has a drawing of a C&SLR train at Stockwell and a photo of a Picc. 1959 tube stock at Rayners Lane.

I was lucky enough last year to find a 1993 edition on Amazon for £10 - the seller really didn't know what he was selling!
It's a tremendous book with a very readable style. It's a shame that so few copies are available. During the introduction to the second edition is says that the second edition was printed as second hand values had risen because of the few copies available. Perhaps it's time for another print run to be made.

I have no idea why green was chosen, seeing as how the clay in question is 'blue'...

I am going to have to give up retiring for a few more years to afford a green copy. $180 US (about £95).
I just spent a wad recently for the two volume The Railways of Britain, 2nd edition by Col. Michael Cobb.

Thank you Slugabed! The bookfinder site was a gem.
I found a used 1962 copy at Abe Books for $36 (£20) and that includes shipping. If I like it enough I might end up eventually getting a '93 or an '07 edition.
I wasn't too clear on the differences in the versions/printings. Anything really worthwhile?

Just FYI, I received my £20 copy from Abe books over the weekend. I have only read about 2 chapters. Very nice but nothing I didn't know as of yet. Hopefully some nuggets will be found!
Mine is an original 1962 version with a multi-color cover. It is a an ex-library copy from Keighley. It has the normal library clear plastic dust cover and old date stamps on the inside covers. Latest one is 1972!

By a strange twist of fate, I suspect that I may have browsed that very copy on the shelves of Keighley library about 17/18 years ago!

I'll dust it for fingerprints! When I got it I hoped someone had not just scarpered it from the library and now the book warden will be looking for me... BTW - off topic and mentioned only this once - the book came wrapped in several pages of "The Times" in which there was the daily crossword puzzle. As a typical American, I could not figure out a single clue - let alone a single answer.

Hmm. The University Library seens to have a 1962 and 1993 edition, marked as being borrowable by eligible readers. Since I possess a comedically long gown, that includes me, so it would be excellend bedtime reading. The only catch is that the overdue fines are mind blowing.

Just FYI - I am up to the WWI years in the book. I have to revise my previous comment. I am learning all sorts of new and detailed information.
I am glad I snarfed up a copy so cheaply. Well worth it.
