Hi all.
I can see in the six month track closures that there will be a couple of weekends where southbound Metropolitan line trains to Aldgate will not stop at Baker Street. There is no mention of northbound services but it does say that Met trains terminating at Baker Street will continue to do so.
Can someone explain why?
Thanks

Probably during the platform extension works for S8 trains or enabling for these works.

Probably during the platform extension works for S8 trains or enabling for these works. I didn't know that platform 3 needs to be extended. I know that some work will have to be done at Baker Street but I thought it was only platforms 1 and 4 that needed extending. Unless platform 4 will also be closed, but then wouldn't some trains have to terminate somewhere else if trains could only use platform 1 to reverse?

Why not just suspend the service between Aldgate and Finchley Rd/Wembley Pk, at least some proper work can be done then! What about the two bay roads (plats 1 & 4) when are they going to be sorted?

If the met and jubilee is suspended (say its a saturday), the people would need to go via Ranyers Lane

Or by replacement bus, or by Overground (assuming that isn't also suspended). Some people might also make the short Northwick Park - Kenton walk (which is clearly signposted) and take the Bakerloo/Watford DC line into town.

Thanks The S8 work at Baker Street will see Platforms 3 & 4 closed. Thus City trains who normally run through Plt 3 will non-stop. City trains through Platform 2 will be able to stop normally - as will services normally booked into Platform 1.

Will Amershams start at Wembley Park then?

Why would they? It's only a platform at Baker Street that is being non-stopped. Trains will go from Finchley Road non-stop to Great Portland Street.
Or are you saying Amershams terminate at Baker Street so would be a platform short with P4 closed? Sorry, I don't know the Met service pattern hence the question.

Yes basically. Watfords run every 10min reversing on platform 1 and Amershams run every 10-20min using platform 4. Use of the platforms is not fixed to those services however, but generally its the aim. With platform 4 closed the full Watford and Amersham service could not be terminated there.

I wonder how many microseconds it will take before citysig and Harsig lament the loss of platform 3 for reversing services south to north off the platform, rather than via the trailing crossover past the junction....

Agree, sounds like a bad idea to me! Could a single slip not be added here?

I've seen some crazy plans for new track layouts at East Finchley, Finchley Central and Golders Green. Someone in the Strategy department spent a lot of time writing a report which "found" that some of the sidings at Golders Green are "little used" and "a hangover from past operating practices", which I presume to mean uncoupling. This may be so, but 24/25 sidings come in *so* handy when the service is not running as it should. Loss of the aforementioned reversing facility at Baker Street Pfm 3 will be much regretted.

Agree, sounds like a bad idea to me! Could a single slip not be added here? A track designer would be able to confirm the practicalities of fitting all the metalwork in (and please note the whole design has been Track Engineering led), but I don't believe we have a safety case for the new installation of any style of point machine on a single slip layout.
