Hi All, I'm new to this, so please be kind!
I'm not sure whether this is the correct forum or whether it should be in Trains Technical - I will leave it to the Admin lads to decide!
As I recall, when the D78s were delivered, the drivers sliding door opened into the recess of the first saloon window.
However some time later, the part of this saloon window that accommodated the Driver's door was replaced with aluminium sheeting.
Since sliding door pockets in windows are not exactly a new innovation, could the experts out there explain why this mod was deemed necessary, and when it took place please?

I certainly don't class myself as one of your 'experts' !
This window, along with others was modified at the time of the ventilation improvements.
These were carried out at Acton Works (double-enders) or returned to MCW Birmingham (except 7129- delivered new) between March 1983 and January 1985. These are the mods that put the opening hopper windows into the top of some 'double glazed' windows.
It was found on tests that the hottest part of an un-modified D Stock car was immediately behind the drivers "J" door. So, the nearest window had the small half-hopper inserted into it, creating the blank panel to hide the door opening.
Car 7108 was the trial for these, having wooden panels inserted into the windows to show the hoppers. This car also had vents cut above the windows, these resembled a grille. Unfortunately these grilles were in the space occupied by the internal car line maps! These extra grilles were eventually plated over, the car still has these today.
