While standing on the eastbound platform at south ken I noticed opposite there is a disused platform also it looks like the track that once served it was lifted at some point. does anyone one know why this platform was abandoned or maybe why the track was removed?

South Kensington has a few disused platforms. Check the wiki artical for it. Its all about the former ownership by two companies.

I was there today - is the computer screen in the office window at the east end of the district platforms the infamous Trackernet? And is its presence officially sanctioned?

Sth Ken used to have 5 platforms above ground. The northern most platforms where east and westbound Met paltforms, there was a bay platform accessed from Gloucester Rd and the District had the southern two platforms! Restructuring during the 50s-60s lead to only 2 platforms remaining. Today the Eastbound platform was the Met westbound line, and the current Westbound road was the eastbound District platform!

It is usually used to show train lists, which is part of the trackernet application. It is not in customer facing language though.

It is useful for eastbound customers though as the train describer board only shows trains when they've arrived at Gloucester Road (1 min away).

Presumably this is because the describer cannot be certain about which train will be next until it has come through the junction.
