I've just seen the video to Oh My Life by Beth Rowley on YouTube. In it there is a short segment on an Unrefurbed D-stock (not only that, but its an excellent song).

Good old D stock interior, still lives on... Yep, shame on all the people here who expressed their preference for the refurbed version. ;D

Me, I definitly prefer the unrefurbed version. And I still wonder...is there a proper name for those hanging balls? ~Ra'akone

Refurb all the way. ;D They at least look slightly sanitary.
The combination of orange doors and unsanitary seats reminded me of one thing - puke.
Going back some years, the "pizza" seats which were also used on the Metrobus/Titan/Olympians were ghastly. Not only did I visualise puke, but it was puke on seats. The bright colour also meant dust was easily visible and they were in a right state when I took a ride in 2001.

I was on a Titan last year (not in London) and the seats looked terrible, and were covered in dust. I am suprised that they replaced the seats on the D stock before refurbishing them - the seats on the 1992 Stock are in much worse condition and they haven't replaced them.

Me, I definitly prefer the unrefurbed version. And I still wonder...is there a proper name for those hanging balls? ~Ra'akone Heard them refered to as "Flexible hand grabs" and "Bobble strap hangers" from certain LU enthusiast sites (I think trainwebm square wheels or tubeprune?) Many however say "strap" or "stap hanger" although I tend not to as I think of a "strap" being the looped ones.

I would imagine their successors didn't get an official name so staff and public still referred to them as strap hangers.

I have read somewhere that these ball strap hangers were tried on the Hong Kong Metro, but removed because the women wouldn't hold on to them as they felt them to be a bit phallic in design.

These straps were first introduced in around 1980 when the metro opened and stayed until the refurbishment in around 2000. I have heard the exact same thing about the women.

How strange! The Honk Kong women felt uncomfortable holding on to them but the Hong Kong men had no problems with them at all. ;D

Now they're gone. The refurbing of the M-Trains (which have the bobble thing) replaced them with triangular holds, also mounted on a spring-like thing (the refurb made the MTR look so much more modern).
