The title says it all.
Why did it close? Will it ever re-open? Whats going to happen to the paltforms?

It closed because the Jubilee line extension plans changed drastically in the 20 years after the line opened. It's still used as a reversing facility on the Jubilee line, as well as by various film crews etc. It could re-open in future as part of an extension of the DLR west of Bank.
I should add that many threads have been opened discussing this in great detail, have a look through.

The title says it all. Why did it close? Because of a change of plan for Stage 2. That's also, sort of, why Aldwych closed - but it took rather longer to die!

I read that Aldwych closed due to low ridership.

I read that Aldwych closed due to low ridership. Aldwych was closed because the lifts needed replacing, and it would have cost too much for the amount of people using the station.

Not to mention that the CX Jubilee escalators were life expired aswell.

I have also had the following information by PM about the 'life-expired' escalators at Charing Cross Jubilee: I think they were not, because they were only 20 years old when the station closed, and the rest of the escalators of the same vintage are still going strong. Those on the Trafalgar Square side are even older (1967). I shall unlock this thread if anyone wishes to comment.

There might be something if you channel colin again, but ISTR a discussion about this and it must have been here somewhere. IIRC it is a case of that parts that would have been replaced (or maintained) haven't been since those escalators have been mothballed... So to that extent only are they 'life-expired'...

I wonder if "life expired" has become a catch-all phrase for any works. The escalators to the Jubilee platforms at Canning Town were replaced in 2007, eight years after the line opened, andI recall those were described as "life expired" on posters as well.

They were life expired. They were due to be replaced the year before the Jubilee line platforms closed, but were given special dispensation for the final year.

I seem to remember from an earlier thread that moreover at least one of the escalators, though visibly intact from the passengers' perspective, has had large chunks of its internals cannibalised for re-use elsewhere.

Regardless of station equipment, the station as it sits now with the extended line, simply does not fit into the greater scheme of things.
The bulk of the service is end-to-end tubeline. Charing Cross is amply served by other lines and nearby stations, and to have this small spur written properly into the service, for the sake of one station, means you lose a path for a train that could run to/from Stratford.
It's a handy reversing / train storage location in times of need, but the rest of the time it's simply not needed. Sometimes, you have to let things go... ;D

For anyone interested, today (20th November) marks the 10th anniversary of the closure of the Jubilee line part of Charing Cross...how time flies when you're enjoying yourself!

Caught my tube at Stanmore last Friday and the driver announced we would be terminating at Charing Cross. The DVA suggested Green Park though

So what? They temporarilly re-opened the Jubilee platforms at Cx? No. The driver must have been running quite significantly late, and was being turned via Charing Cross. The driver enters Charing Cross on the DVA system which automatically puts it out as terminating at Green Park, the train goes empty to Charing Cross and back out again to Green Park Northbound.

All we need now is to change Green Park to Dover Street and Charing Cross to Strand and well be really confused (and no it's not a suggestion or idea )
