Hi
I'm interested in creating fantasy railway maps - both geographic and metro-style/schematic. I'm a 100% novice - can anyone suggest a good graphics package to start with, please?
Thanks very much

I'm so much a novice that I forgot to specify - I use a PC, not a Mac!

From the look of various comments on here by the mapistas, 'Inkscape' seems to be a good starting point - and it is a free download too.

Inkscape is pretty good, and considering its free its very decent. Don't bother forking out anything for the bloatware like Illustrator; but then again that goes for any software

Inkscape is a new one on me, I've never heard of it. My drawing software of choice is Serif Drawplus which I have been using for almost a decade, cheaper than many of its competitors though expensive in the long term if kept up to date as mine is. Then again I use the entire Serif suite of Drawplus, Pageplus, Webplus, Photoplus, Movieplus and Panoramaplus as well as all the third party plugins, OCR, CAD, wordread and other extras that they supply.
Having said that I am a great believer in free and open source software and use Open Office Org which has a drawing package built in although I haven't actually used it. There seem to be more and more open source free packages being created for Windows users these days and they usually contain many of the features of expensive purchased software though in general terms they will never be quite as comprehensive. cnet and tucows downloads are the places to seek out decent free packages but there are others.
