Keep 29 road free, TRAIN 545 on the way. Along with a large number of funny looking men in vests, all trying to look important and busy. ;D No. We must be serious here. A higher level of security will be in force for the arrival, and a large number of new cameras are now up and running to protect the train, following a nasty graffiti attack inside the sheds a few weeks back. Im on tonight, camera at the ready.

The first cog in the downfall of the Met line is here. I've seen this before with the 59 stock on the Northern, the line has never been the same since.

There's a lot of people on the Northern Line who still have fond memories of the 59 and in some cases 38 stock. The DMT's office at Camden Town is plastered with photos of 59 and 38 stocks, with not a 95 stock to be seen.

Nothing lasts forever though does it? I'm no expert on trains and just come on here as I have a general interest but it often seems to me that posters are almost willing new designs and proceedures to fail without giving them a chance. I get as nostalgic as the next man about all the old stock of my youth but realise that those days are gone and aren't coming back. Sure it will be sad to see the end of the A stock and the C stock and finally the D stock but I can also remember people slating the latter when they replaced the R stock, and now they're getting dewey eyed as they enter their final years of duty. I'll wait and see before I judge.

The first cog in the downfall of the Met line is here. I thought it was actually when the C class [1] arrived. [1] By which I mean the copies of James Stirling's SER Q class 0-4-4T. Bogie stock, Electrification, Dreadnoughts, T stock, Q/O/P stock, A stock are all later cogs ... and I'm sure I've missed a few. ;D We've all missed the best of it... Or maybe that's yet to come.

I'm glad the A stock is still here abiet in a terrible looking condition, it'l be sad for me considering Iv'e grown up with them being on the met. going up to metroland on a rockhard L shaped seat at only 40 miles per hour dosent sound like a terrific improvement to me...

Well they look terrible because management are lazy and don't want them to look good so their replacements reflect well.
Thankfully I'll be moving down to Harrow soon so I can use the Chiltern Line to London and then the Bakerloo.
ajax, I've grown up with them too, and I'll miss them lots. They are warm, comfortable and welcoming.

I've only been on an A stock once and that was by mistake...even Londoners can get lost in the city! I happened to chose a carriage with the motors and it really made me jump the first time I heard them whine up. Because of this I can't say I'll miss them but they have stood the test of time. Nearly 50 years in service and due for replacement. Quite an interesting looking train to say the least. www.flickr.com/photos/lastarial/3319736990

No, the A stock replaced the last proper passenger trains on LU. Proper trains consist of a locomotive and coaches, not multiple units.

Multiple units certainly have their place, but a lot of the opposition to S-stock from Met line passengers has been on the basis that the Metropolitan Line is more like an outer suburban railway than a high volume short distance metro service, and so they should get trains that reflect this status.
My point is that while the A stocks are well designed and built, and were good for their day, I do not see them as being special in the same way that some do. Other than the seating layout, I don't see how the A stock is so different to the C or D stock. Yes, I know this is probably heretical, but I genuinely don't understand the fuss. The A stock has served London well and I agree at least one unit should be preserved for the sake of history and nostalgia, but then I also think this about every other LU stock, and I suspect that in years to come I will be saying exactly the same about the S stock.

I had to smile, when back in 1999, the driver on a Northern '59 sarcastically announced “sorry for the delay, this is due to a defective NEW train in front of us”.

I guess you are aware that each line will have a different seating layout for the new S stock? Met gets more seats than all the other lines in the S stock. You must have seen the diagram at the Upminster open day?

I do not see them as being special in the same way that some do Well each to their own I suppose, but I work with the A stock every day and they give the Met line a very good atmosphere. Same as on the Northern, when the 95 stock turned up, the whole feeling of the line changed. It went from an interesting line with a real buzz about it, to a plastic, boring, soulless place. I'm seriously worried about the same happening on the Met. I had to smile, when back in 1999, the driver on a Northern '59 sarcastically announced “sorry for the delay, this is due to a defective NEW train in front of us”. Ha ha ;D Nice one!

Finally old A stock going! YAY! You won't be saying that once the S stock enters service, and Metropolitan Line passengers are subjected to the same downgrade that London Overground passengers are currently having to get used to.

Yes, agree. I HATE the Northern Line. It has no atmosphere at all. Its not that the new trains are bad, they and the line have no soul and they are very very slow!

LU move customers from A to B, they used to do it via 'C'.

Then you would be able to tell the difference and see how special they are. Does Chris really have to have driven one to form his own personal preference? He is entitled to his opinion regardless of if he is a passenger or a member of staff. Just for the record, I have driven all the sub-surface stock (not to mention quite a few tube trains) and do not think that 'A' Stock is anything special either.

You won't be saying that once the S stock enters service, and Metropolitan Line passengers are subjected to the same downgrade that London Overground passengers are currently having to get used to. Whilst you are entitled to your opinion, I personally (having experienced 'A' Stock and also being extremely familiar with 'S') think you are wrong. Yes there are slightly less seats, we are working to compensate for that by running more trains per hour, but everything else on the 'S' is far superior to an 'A'. How anyone can claim that an 'S' Stock is a downgrade is beyond me, and please don't compare the 'S' to a 378 because the two are not in any way comparable. 'S' is a bespoke build specifically for the Sub-Surface Railway unlike the 378's which are an 'off the shelf' design.
