Am I right in thinking that the District is the last line that uses these? At least in the sense of being officially produced by Operational Services. I know there are a few 'unofficial' ones around as I've got a H&C one in the timetable mountain.
(this part may belong more in the Historical board)
Why did the numbering change into a separate series in the 80s? I've found Set Working books for TTs 73/4 (1955), 91 (1966), 92 (1967) - then the numbers move away from the TTs - Book 11 in 1982 and 15 in 1989.
But at some point after that the set working books go back to the WTT numbers - I can find 127 (2000) and 133 (2006).
Does anyone know when the change back happened? Sorry for the rather left-field question - it's all tied in with working out when the numbering series of WTTs started. FWIW [1] I think the District are running the series of numbering that started with the Picc to Uxbridge - the Met are still running the series that started (probably) back in 1933.

I believe that the Circle/H&C still have them (officially produced in the same format as the District); certainly they did when I briefly worked on the line.
As for the rest I'm afraid I can't help!

The Circle and H & C do indeed still have an official issue.

I just got a message from a friend about set working books and their numbering. He writes as follows:
As far as I can see, post Second World War set working books were always numbered in accordance with the timetables with which they were associated (and were called 'Supplements' to those timetables) until around 1972-3. I don't know how they were issued in earlier periods. After that, at least one set working book was issued unnumbered. This co-incides with the staff shortages and the abandonment of timetables with specific periods of valididity, the use of multiple timetables for different days of the week, and the introduction of computer setting. By 1975 successive set working books were issued with serial numbers (the earliest I have is number 3) and each individual day's service is referenced to the specific timetable for that day (Book 3 is for TTs 100/101/99 (by inference book 2 covered TTs 98/97/99 and Book 1 covered C96/96/96). There were innumerable changes to timetable combinations and if each combination required its own set working book the book numbers must have shot up quite fast. I can quite see it would have been VERY confusing to issue set working books aligned to three different timetables... This arrangement seems to have outlived the issue of separate daily timetables and uncertain period of operation (normality finally resumed in 1987) but it seems to have taken a few years for the old system of numbering set working books to be restored (probably no-one realized the system had been different 12 years previously). The earliest I have in the restored series is the book for WTT 123 (1996) but I suspect set working numbering was probably restored a little earlier - perhaps around 1990-91 (I have a SWB for a TTN then and it looks as though the system had reverted?)

Just a little piece of info regarding the C&H Set Working books. Although they are officially produced by the Schedules department, the C&H books have a disclaimer printed inside them, stating that the book cannot be guaranteed to be accurate This dates back to when they were first produced for the C&H, in the early 1990's, and the data was compiled locally at Edgware Road. Because the data was not, at that time, input centrally from any computers, but was done by one of the admin staff at Edgware Road, there was a risk of mistakes, hence the disclaimer. Even though they are now produced by the Timetable Office, the disclaimer remains, but only in the C&H book ;D As a point of interest, I have got a copy of C&H Set Working book No 2, dated 29th May 1994, which I believe was numbered along with the Timetable of that date.

Are these the books that trainopd78 uses to produce the Cliffs Notes-style duty booklets with the colour-coded sections for the Mon-Fri, Sat and Sun duty/train mappings and timings?

No - the books that trainopd78 produces show what train work is done by a particular duty, but the Set Working book shows what a particular train, or Set number, does during the day. It is laid out in M-F, then Sat then Sun, (but not with colour coded pages ) For each section, the trains are listed in numerical order, with the start and end points and arrival and departure of each journey shown. So the District Set Working will show Train 1 Dt Up 0618 Empty Up 0624 E Bdwy 0755 E Bdwy 0804 Up 0934 Up 0943 Rmd 1112 Rmd 1124 Up 1250 and so on

Ahh - just re-read TOK's post, and I think I see what you mean ;D ;D I would guess that trainopd78 uses the Set Working books to produce the Duty books, as it is the easiest way to find what a train does

Yeah, the set working is the main tool like SB states, but the WTT is also used for the more fiddly bits.

The Circle and H & C do indeed still have an official issue. After casting around for one for the H&C, I have found one - but it is unnumbered: this may be due to the title: 'C' Stock Set Working Book to Timetable Notices Nos. 11/99 and 12/99. Temporary Timetable for Covered Way No 58 Works. (And the disclaimer is still inside). WRT District Set working books, I've now got a copy (like TP) of Set Working book No 3. An interesting facet of the operations side.
