So I'm seeing that the northbound platform is being widened into the space next to the bay road and it made me wonder... will a Spanish solution be implemented with the bay? a la Tower Gateway.

Is the bay platform actually being lengthened as well? Would appear so from that diagram, in which case, is it still only going to be used by LO? Or would the Bakerloo line be able to use it too?

In all honesty i dont know why it isnt being made into being a through road. Once again short term planning, rather then looking at the wider picture.

Would conversion to a through road not cause problems with (a) access to the footbridge at the down end of the station (IIRC there is only one stairway) and (b) as a result put too much pressure on the footbridge at the HL end with all those people hitherto using the down end having to use the fairly constricted connection between the HL and LL platforms?

Hi
I have it on good authority that the bay (platform 2) is being lengthened to accomodate 1 x 4-car 378 only. The footbridge is staying where it is (though it will be altered slightly to make room). The northern end buildings are to be demolished and new brick built buildings will be situated on the northbound (widened) platform.
Hope this helps Martin

Network Rail press release (date not found!)
Background The work at Willesden Junction Station is part of the £326m project sponsored by Transport for London (TfL), Network Rail, the Olympic Delivery Authority and the Department for Transport to upgrade the London Overground network and improve its services. What are we going to do? TfL have plans to run longer trains on the Richmond to Stratford route. These will be four carriages long (the current trains have only three). In order to achieve this, both platforms at the Stratford (east) end of the high level station will be extended by approximately 25 metres. This will involve widening the steel bridge over the low level tracks. A new link will also be constructed between the high and low level stations. This will link the east end of the lengthened high level platforms via a subway to the footbridge over the low level tracks. Finally the bay platform at the low level station will be extended to allow its use by four carriage trains. This will involve removal of the existing buildings at the northern (Watford) end of the station and the construction of replacement buildings on a widened platform 3. The work will involve: Clearing vegetation Relocating buildings and railway cables Piling and building concrete foundations Erecting steel bridge sections Installing footpaths, ramps and stairs Extending the existing track at the low level station Alterations to the power/electrification of the rail lines in the area Re-signalling of the route from Acton to Stratford (altering existing and installing new signals) to provide increased train service capacity on the lines. On completion of the Network Rail work TfL will complete the station finishes (lighting etc). How will we gain access? Most materials will be delivered by rail on Sundays. Our workers will generally come to site by van and will park adjacent to the rail depot south of the station. Excavators will be of a “Road Rail” type and will be brought on / off the tracks clear of the station area.

Sticking with the same subject but going back in time, I found out today that the northbound bay was taken out of use from the end of traffic on 23/11/63, which was then platform No.13. Both bays were then five cars long. I recall being on a 3-car Oerlikon train in the 1950s that terminated in one of the bays.
What I haven't been able to find out (yet) is when the remaining bay platform (adjacent to the southbound/Up) was shortened from five to its present length of three cars.
Can anyone help with this one, please.

Ragnarok: I remember reading recently in an article about the current works at Willesden, perhaps here, perhaps on London Reconnections, that these works involved demolishing existing buildings *dating from the 1960s* to enable 4-car trains to use the bay. Sorry I can't be more specific.

Many thanks for that - much appreciated. That gives me a good idea of where I should start looking. If I get a result, I'll post it!
