Zones have vanished from the Underground Map for now, but given public opinion I suspect that they will be back, but when they do return, there is going to be some problems in showing them. These all stem from the rule that if your journey changes zone, you are charged the higher fare, even if you are returning to the same zone as you started.
The first problem is subtle, with through CJ to NLL services, and Willsden Junction as a border station, how can the correct zones be shown? Uniquely, just before WJ, NLL trains are technically in Zone 3, but WLL trains are technically in Zone 2, even though they are on the same tracks (I think). This is necessary so that Acton Central to Harlesden is charged as a single zone fare, likewise Shepherd's Bush to Kensal Rise, but its going to be nasty to show on the map. Technically, the tracks from Acton Central to Willesden Junction must go through zone 2, because in reality they are between East Acton and North Acton, and North Acton is on the zone boundary. The people who like their lines to cross in the 'correct' places must hate that one.
The second problem will stem from Shoreditch moving to zone 1, but a special fare available for people who don't get off there. That one is going to need yet another warning of some sort on the map,

Perhaps the solution to Willesden Junction would be to shade the zone boundaries, rather than alternate zones, then simply flare the boundary when it encompasses a line and/or station?
If I understand the Shoreditch situation you describe correctly, that sounds like a recipe for chaos.

Well, the river will definitely be back, but Boris hasn't lost his temper about the zones, so we will see. According to London reconnections, there will be a special Zone 1 avoiding fare, but only from Dalston to Wapping. This leads to a big pile of questions:
Is it a special fare, or does that mean that a z2+ Travelcard is valid between these particular stations.
If I use a z2+ Travelcard to get from Canonbury to Wapping, will I be subject to a penalty fare? If so, how could the ticket inspector know?

What's happening about rezoning before 2012? IIRC isn't it supposedly going to go to 3 zones?

Why is this country so good at making things complicated? Anything on the Tube map (or whatever it's called now) should just be a flat fare regardless of stops. I'm no economist but I'd hazzard a guess that the money saved on implementing the zonal system could quite possibly cover any losses incurred.....
