Ok, so am confused about the JL upgrade. My confusion flows from both experience and the info I've read as they seem to contradict.
As I lived in Docklands until recently, I used the JEL quite regularly. When I first started using it, the service was not all that fast compared to the Central or Vic. Then all of a sudden it sped up. I attributed this to the work Tublines had been doing on the signalling. I then thought I'd had this confirmed when I read the signalling had been upgraded between Startford and Waterloo. However, there are still lots of scheduled closures of the JEL. Can someone clarify? Is this just for further testing?
Also, any idea if Tublines will hit their 1st Jan 2010 deadline for completion of the upgrade, or is that now just pie in the sky?

I should correct myself. There have been lots of recent closures as opposed to there being lots of future closures of the JEL. But the speeding up seemed to happen before the closures of JEL finished...

There were revisions to the timing of trains between Stratford and Waterloo in 2007 - only ½ min on book; AIUI there was another look at run times with the current WTT as well as carefully looking at station dwell times.
I suspect the speeding up is only a matter of ¾ min in running time, but feels longer due to slightly shorter station dwell times - even if it is only shaving 3 seconds off each station stop that mounts up to ½ minute saved on the JLE for doing not a lot.
If you add the times together, you'd get something like 1½ min saved - does that tie in with your experience?

Not exactly. I am always inclined to move to the middle of a carriage (so that I am surrounded by those seated). This has two advantages - you don't get pushed around to let people on/off and you are the closest to the seats should someone else get off. As secondary consideration you also have to use the horizontal handrails or have a good sense of balance. On The JEL, thanks to the lack of curves, I generally use both hands to manipulate the morning paper and so have developed a better (than I previously had) sense of the speed at which we're travelling. This is because you need to know how to shift your weight in order to stop yourself flying into the next nearest passenger. I noticed that the trains were speeding up more rapidly and also braking with greater force. During the morning rush, dwell times are normally dictated by the number of people trying to get on or off at any given station and so I didn't really notice a huge difference there but did see a slight difference if I used JEL outside of peaks. Now that I've made myself sound like a mechanical mathematician, I will be quiet, if only for a short period.

Any increase in speed wouldn't be down to the signalling. All the improvements will only start showing once the line goes over to it's new signalling.
Possibly track work was done (or similar) that removed a speed restriction.

Point taken about speed limitiations.
Can someone remind me if the Jub upgrade will be using a fixed or moving block ATO?
I digress. Anyone know if the Jub upgrade will be completed this year Tube Lines keeping that info a closely guarded secret for fear of having punitive measures enforced?

The signalling is Seltrac, the same as on the DLR so moving block. The upgrade won't be finished by the end of the year. The feeling of people in the know on this forum is that we won't be seeing full ATO for a while.

At the moment looks like TBTC will be commissioned North Greenwich-Waterloo by the end of December.

Looking at the 6 month look ahead for planned closures work will be carried through until the weekend of 9th January 2010 after which point there are no more planned closures for the Jubilee line.
Might have to take a ride on the Jubilee afterwards to see what its like with the ATO in operation.

They must be getting desperate to finish we've heard the project want the tower in SMD open Christmas Day.
