on the last one, isn't that Spitalfields Market on the Left? The tower you can see sticking up in the background is then part of the Truman Brewery, and the street runing off is Hanbury Street. www.streetmap.co.uk/oldmap.srf?x=533725&y=181820&z=110&sv=533725,181820&st=4&ar=Y&mapp=oldmap.srf&searchp=oldsearch.srf&lm=0 is where I think it is. There is a pub on that corner whose name eludes me... now very trendy

There's supposed to be the best bagel shop in London around that area, known to all TO's on nights. The only problem is dodging the "ladies of the night"

Right, thanks everyone! 1. www.gmhistorian.btinternet.co.uk/abg533.jpg shows the side of Toynbee Hall south at 28 Commercial Street, and thr wall on the left is still there but replaced. The crane is a wheeled one on scaffolding. 2. www.gmhistorian.btinternet.co.uk/abg545.jpg shows the Commercial Street bridge over the ex-GER with the round building on the corner with Quaker Street. The building behind that evidently also still exists. The Bishopsgate HL Goods Depot is behind the left-side high wall and that burned down not long before the pix were taken in December 1964. I appreciate all the efforts! Photo abg530 is looking back at the Toynbee Hall etc.

Mmm... the beigel shops (there's two of them) at the top of Brick Lane... fantastic. (although agree re the avoiding point).
Used to live round there just off the Bethnal Green Road.

Is the Bagel shop the one that comes alive at midnight or so, with service into the early hours? I haven'd had salt beef sandwiches since I went to college near Kings Cross back in 1974!

Yes, it's the one nearest the traffic lights in Hackney Road that is open longest and get the best accplades for their beigels, but they are NOT kosher! The other one is Kosher, as are their beigels, so is not open on the Sabbath. I speak as an enthusiastic 'goy' in the area since childhood! ;D

Even the guv knew that Brick Lane was on the Picc, yours probably thought it was on the District. Mind you when working at the Picc East End substations I'd sometimes use the bagel shop in Wood Green on the edge of Shopping City and occasionally I might even frequent the one in Tottenham High Road. My favourite bagel was cream cheese and thanks to Tesco I can still get them here in Lincs.

OTT there used to be an excellent kebab shop next to Turnham Green statiion...went there once from Hounslow with mates especially.
Cream cheese and smoked salmon for me (bagels that is!). Right, now we have a new motorbility car for our son, bagels from the Brick Lane area are on the menu!
