Whilst at West Hampstead today a strange train rumbled through - see photo 1 - yes I know its DM 5074 heading an A60 unit with Sorry Not in Service displayed, but take a closer look at the third car back with lights underneath... See photo 2 & photo 3 for a closer look... I'm assuming some sort of track recording train At the other end there was 5235 which was coincidentally the final unit that left Shoreditch before closing... Sadly I didn't capture the number of the car with the kit, but does anyone have any ideas?

AVI train? Audio-visual Inspection; I think it has been mentioned on the forum - certainly the right sort of reporting number.

5234 is the AVI unit, so why were the lights under the other unit?

They are on trailer 6235 I think?
Is this set ever going to run in pax service again or is that it?

D Stock unit 7070 is similarly fitted and works in normal service when not required for AVi.

They are on trailer 6235 I think? I also saw it at West Hampstead on Wednesday, and the lights were definately on trailer 6075.

Can I ask a (probably very) stupid question? I can understand the Visual aspect of the inspection, but how does Audio come into this - what does listening to something achieve?

Not a stupid question, but to the best of my knowledge (I don't know for certain) but I think the audio bit is not so much the "soundtrack" to a video that's made, but more equipment on board "listening" to the track and collating electronic / sonic data from the track.

According to the traffic circular, it is the Auto Video Inspection Train - dunno where you've all got Audio from!....
There is no mention of anything audio in the descriptive text; it is merely described as using bright lights which shouldn't be looked at for prolonged periods.

Some of us were born for the stage darling. One mention of bright lights and we naturally assume the music will follow ;D ;D ;D
