This morning, I observed some rather odd activity on the W&C at Waterloo and was wondering if anyone could shed any light on what might have happened.
I came down the stairs to the departure platform, to find a train already there which was too full to get on. Shortly after, the doors shut, but the train didn't move and the starter signal remained red. It sat there for about 5 or so mins (the driver made some announcement inside the train, but it was impossible for those of us on the platform to hear).
Then two members of staff wander in from the depot end of the platform. One walks up the (now very crowded) platform to the front of the train, while the other gets into the back cab. The train then starts moving back towards the depot, but stops after about 20 feet. The doors re-open, the member of staff gets out of the back cab, the signal comes off, the doors close, and the train trundles off towards Bank.
My train then comes in after and runs to Bank without incident (other than running into the left hand platform (P8?) instead of the usual one, and I arrive at work around 15mins later than expected.
Anyone any idea what might've been going on? What was broken that could be fixed by setting the train back? During this time, there were no announcements on the platform, other than the automated one telling us that the District, Circle and H&C were delayed, and everything else was running fine!

Will find out when I get to work later, unless someone posts something before then.

There was a signal failure yesterday evening at Waterloo, but I doubt that started yesterday morning.

Ahh, thanks, that makes a lot of sense. I presume WK20 is the starter, though I don't recall the train moving far enough forward to get beyond the stick.
At least it was sorted out quickly, which is more than would've been the case on NR.

was a bad day for the waterloo city line yesterday.
first off all it was touch and go as to wether it was going to start on time as they were repairing some stuff in the depo tha caused a suspension on wed.
then there was a suspesion yesterday morning due to a track circuit problem. then shortly after that we had a SPAD.
joys working at waterloo station

Is the W&C line still signalled to NR standards? Or was they all ripped out and replaced upon privatisation.
When the W&C was in NR's hands, did it have AWS ?? If not what level of protection did it have?

Or was they all ripped out and replaced upon privatisation? Aaah. The W&C isn't the ELL, you know!

With the addition of a new building incorporating the step back room for T/Op's and office for the DMT's located on what was 4Rd. Rear Clear plungers were also installed on 5Rd and when operated illuminates a 'RCC' visual on the outlet signal. Recently a new train wash with an additional signal has also been commissioned on 5Rd.

Rear Clear plungers were also installed on 5Rd and when operated illuminates a 'RCC' visual on the outlet signal. Recently a new train wash with an additional signal has also been commissioned on 5Rd. The line is still a bit of a halfway house between LU and NR practices. There were theoretically opportunities to make it more like LU during the 2006 closure, but the original plan didn't involve a long closure and hence the opportunity was never realised. In signalling terms, the blockade was less of a resignalling and more like a rewiring with a large number of modifications included. Very few signal positions were changed, if any.
