How are the 38s doing on IOW these days? Last time I went was about a decade ago.

The trains themselves seem to be in good nick, although an internal refresh wouldn't go a miss in some places, particularly repainting the grab poles. The trackwork isn't the highest quality in the world though, so the ride is very bouncy in places. Particularly Smallbrook Junction-Ryde St Johns Road. I was there on the 21st of this month, and I'm looking forward to comparing them with LU's train on the 5th. (click for a larger version)

Nice-looking interior. It does tend to resemble the 59/62 stocks rather than the 38.

It must be the colour scheme and the flourescent tubes. Nice pic Chris, I see what you mean about the grab rails. It does beg the question though, have these units surpassed the point where they would need replacement? Its a (relatively) simple design, with a fairly low usage, and a ridiculously high following even within the industry. The fact that no plans for replacement are in the contract for franchise really says something. Which stock is most likely to replace them.... I think its a fair bet to say nobody could place a solid bet.

'A' stock might be nice... Given that it would be out of gauge (the restricted dimensions of Ryde tunnel is the reason tube-gauge stock is used), an A stock would not be a good choice for this line.

There are a whole bunch of new tube stock orders due to roll off the production line over the next few years. I assume some of the stock it replaces will find its way over to the IoW. (Shame the electric line was cut back so far from Ventnor though.)
